How do I search for projects, files and notes?

Learn how to search on Marvin to surface relevant data and files

Marvin centralizes your team’s research and customer knowledge, so you can surface insights when you need them. Let’s explore how to search for files, notes, and more in Marvin.

From the Home page

When you login to Marvin, you’ll be taken to the home page by default. Here, you can use the Search/Ask AI bar to

  1. Search for files: For when you’re looking for a specific project or research

  2. Ask a question: For when you have a research question to answer, but don’t know where to find the insights

Marvin auto-detects whether you’re searching or asking a question, but you can always manually select either Ask AI or Search.

Search results are based on keywords that match the file name.

Ask AI scans data in files and synthesizes relevant insights into an answer.*

*If you’re on an Enterprise plan, Marvin will collate answers from across the repository

*If you’re on a Free or Standard plan, you can search within a project.

You can narrow down your search by choosing to search only among research notes, files, Insights and Playlists, or transcripts and documents.

Whether you’re searching or prompting Ask AI, we recommend you add filters for time period, file tags, and labels, to get the best results. You can learn more about writing effective Ask AI prompts in our help center article.

Within a project

Inside a project, you will see two search bars:

  1. A Search/Ask AI bar in the top right corner

  2. The Find file bar in the toolbar above project updates

The Search/Ask AI bar automatically detects where you are in Marvin and automatically limits Ask AI and Search results to that project. For example, if you ask a question from the Projects page, it will show you results across your repository*. If you are inside a project, it will show you answers based only on files, notes, Insights, etc., in that project.

*You must be on an Enterprise plan to run repository-wide searches.

To quickly locate a file by keyword, search in the Find file bar. Marvin will match your search to the file name to show you results.

If you want to search across notes, transcripts, Insights, Playlists, documents, etc., use the Search/Ask AI bar in the top right corner.

In the Analysis tab in a project

You’ll see two search bars on the Analyze notes page.

Click Find notes in the top left corner to search for notes in the project by keyword.

To run Ask AI on all or selected notes, type your question in the bar where it says Run prompt on X notes. X will vary by the number of notes you’ve selected.

In Cross project analysis

You’ll find two search bars in Cross project analysis.

Click the magnifying glass in the toolbar to open the Find notes bar. Here you can search for specific notes across projects in Marvin.

Or you can use the Search/Ask AI bar in the top right corner to ask a question and get answers based on notes across projects.

In Discover Research

The Discover Research tab is a hub for your teammates to find and consume the team’s existing research and customer knowledge.

Designed primarily for Viewers and stakeholders who want to surface and read their team’s research, they can focus on asking questions with Ask AI. They can also explore all the published Insights (research reports) across projects.

Teammates conducting research and publishing reports can organize these into Research Areas.

They can also set up topics they want to track. Marvin scans mentions of the keywords across projects and creates weekly summaries that are sent to Slack and Marvin.

All the search and Ask AI in Marvin come together to help you easily share, surface, and act on your team’s customer knowledge.
