Use file tags to organize and surface insights

Learn how to add tags to your files

Updated today

What is the benefit of using file tags?

Adding file tags to your research in Marvin can significantly help your team in two ways:

  1. Organize and group files within a project and across projects

  2. Surface research in AI analysis

Just as you categorize notes, you can organize files in your repository with file tags. The tag should be relevant for the entire file.

For example, within the same project, you may interview new users, seasoned users and people in between. Adding tags can help quickly identify and compare insights between these user segments. Similarly, you may want to add tags such as "August 2025" to files to demarcate when the interview was conducted.

You can use this to create effective information architecture in your repository by using shared tags across projects.

To get detailed insights faster, you can filter by file tags on Ask AI and Cross-project analysis. You can even compare information across file tags in Deep Research.

How do I attach file tags?

To attach a file tag, go to "Files" in your project. Locate the file and click the tag icon.

Or you can add tags while accessing the recording or transcript.

You’ll see a list of tags that your team has been using in Marvin. To add or remove a tag, just check or uncheck the box against it. You’ll see the change take place immediately. You’ll see file tags below the participant list.

To manage the tags or create new ones, click "Manage" next to the tag search bar.

Who can edit and create new tags

Admins and Contributors may be allowed to create and/or edit file tags. Admins can control these settings under "Templates" in the navigation menu.

Click "File tag permissions" in the top right corner.

You can choose between 3 settings:

  1. Contributors are allowed to create file tags that are available across all projects

  2. Contributors can create project-specific tags and only edit global tags. The edits will have to be approved by an Admin.

  3. Contributors are allowed to create only project-specific file tags.

How do I edit and create new tags?

You can create different groups of tags, based on what you use them for, such as time period or company name. Within each group, you can create multiple tags. Essentially, groups are a convenient way to organize your tags.

For a specific project, you can hide a tag group that is applied to all projects by clicking "Hide".

  • To create a new group, select "Add new".

  • Give the group a name and click "Save".

  • To add a tag to it, give it a name and click "Add".

Filter and locate files using file tags

Use the file tag filters on the project page to easily find specific documents, recordings and more. You can even search for file tags by name using the search bar.

You can apply multiple filters together, and even see files that have no tags attached (select "Untagged files").

For example, in the project shown below, you may want to view meetings with new users onboarded in July 2025. Check the boxes against the tags "New User" and "July 2025". You'll only see files that have both these tags.

Or you may want to analyze data of both new and trial users in July 2025. Select "New User" and "Trial User" in the "Type Of User" column. And "July 2025" under "Time Period". You'll see files that have tags of new as well as trial users, but only from July 2025.
