What is Ask AI?

Ask AI is Marvin’s powerful search function, supercharged by AI. You can use it to ask a range of questions about your research data – across projects, notes, users and lots more.

For example, ‘What do customers say about our onboarding?’ or ‘How many customers mentioned our new launch in surveys between October and January?’.

This article contains tips on how to get the best results on Ask AI.

When and how do I use Ask AI?

You can use Ask AI effectively at every stage of your research project.

Before you begin your project, you can ask questions about your existing research to form a hypothesis. You can also ask it to identify participants who you’ve interviewed before and meet the criteria for your new project. Use the information you find to write project overviews and discussion guides. To do this, type in questions in the Ask AI bar on your home page.

Or you can also go to the Discover Research tab to type in your questions.

When you’re gathering data through interviews, surveys, usability tests, etc., use Ask AI on individual files. It will understand the context of the recordings, images and documents to summarize and match insights to your discussion guide and labels.

Under the tab ‘Q/As’, you’ll see key points from the call tagged to specific questions.

Click ‘My topics’ to see insights grouped by topic, theme or use-case. The default topics available for each call are listed under ‘Pre-made topics’. ‘Feedback for Researcher’ will contain helpful guidance and suggested questions for the person moderating the call.

‘Painpoints & Concerns’ and ‘Key Takeaways’ will group relevant information from the call under these topics.

Once you’re ready to synthesize your research, you can uncover trends, find themes in the data, prove or disprove your hypothesis, locate quotes, etc. You can use this information to create reports that can be shared with the rest of your team. You can do this from the Analyze tab.

You can also use Ask AI while analyzing notes across a bunch of projects in ‘Cross project analysis’

What are some of the prompts I can use?

This is not an exhaustive list of prompts. It is a starting guide for you to explore Ask AI. You can ask a range of questions phrased in the way you choose.

Find people

You can ask Marvin to find people who gave specific feedback or mentioned a certain kind of detail on the call.

For example, ‘find users who use the mobile site as well as the desktop site’.

Marvin will show you the name of speakers, what they said, and which call they said it on. Use the option below the results to find more people. Marvin also puts together a useful set of prompts for you to go deeper into the research or find related answers.

Detect themes and trends

Ask AI is a great way to determine user sentiment or find ideas for feature improvements. For example, you can search for, ‘What are the top five queries we receive in our support tickets?’

You're likely to get targeted and accurate results if you ask Marvin to consider a specific data set. Build more context by using the filter for projects, file tags and even time period. Just click on the drop downs and choose as many filters to zero in on the right information.

You can choose to see results from only your notes, surveys, support tickets or documents (such as graphs, research reports and presentations)

You can also prioritize Ask AI answers to show you more recent data when you select ‘Latest data’. By selecting ‘All time data’, you prioritize relevance for the results. ‘Balanced’ accounts for both, relevance and recency, and is the default option.

Compare two things

Marvin can distinguish between two topics and show you a table to easily compare them. For example, we asked Marvin to summarize how the Analyze tab is different from Cross project analysis.

You can verify the data as Marvin lists all the sources it used to write this answer. Each numbered circle will lead you to a source in your repository. It’s a good practice to verify all AI-generated answers.

You can also rate the answer to let us know how Marvin’s AI did. We use your feedback to make Marvin better.

Find quotes

This is a handy feature when you want to build out the reports showcasing your research. Hearing it straight from the users as clips, or a string of clips organized into a playlist is a great way to back up your research hypothesis.

You’ll notice shortcuts at the end of the answer to add the quote to an Insight report and copy the text. You can also ask Marvin to regenerate the answer if you are not satisfied with it.
