Integrate and share research on Slack

Use the Marvin integration with Slack to share data between both apps

Updated over a week ago

Why should I integrate my accounts in Marvin and Slack?

With the Marvin integration with Slack, you can enable two-way sharing between both platforms.

Here are some of the nifty features of this integration:

  • Push your messages on Slack to new project files in Marvin

  • Automate sharing of summaries and Insights on Slack channels

  • Use Marvin’s Ask AI in Slack conversations

Integrating your Slack account

To enable two-way sharing, you have to complete the integration on both apps.

1. Integrate on Marvin

Head over to the "Integrations" tab in the left navigation menu and click "Connect" under Slack.

You'll also find this option in project settings and admin settings.

If an admin on Marvin has already integrated with Slack, you will see a "Disconnect" option on the Integrations page. This means you are already connected as it was done for your entire team.

Once you've integrated, you'll see an option to configure automated research sharing. Learn more about how to configure these settings.

2. Add the Marvin app on Slack

Within Slack, go to the "Apps" section and search for "Heymarvin". Click the app and complete the steps to install it.

Instead of searching in "Apps", you can also type "/heymarvin" in any chat box to quickly locate and install Marvin's app for Slack.

You must complete this step if you want to push your messages in Slack to Marvin or use Ask AI on Slack. The Marvin app on Slack is not automatically added for the entire team.

You’ll have to grant the following permissions to the Marvin app to continue with the integration.

Use Ask AI in Slack

You can use Marvin’s Ask AI directly in a channel or DM conversation on Slack. It will gather insights from your repository in Marvin and add them to your conversations in Slack. You can use Ask AI in any channel and in DMs. It will use all folders to collate responses.

Use command /heymarvin to collate answers from your repository. Here are some examples of the prompts you can use.

Export Messages in Slack to Marvin

You can add important feedback and insights received on messages in Slack to research projects in Marvin. Export any text or images in a message on Slack to a new file in a Marvin project. Annotate and analyze the exported data as usual to make your research more robust.

To access the export option, click on the three dots against any message in Slack and click "More message shortcuts".

Search for "Heymarvin" and select the command that says "Push to Marvin".

You'll need to log in the first time you push a message from Slack.

Grant permission for the app to use your workspace in Slack.

Once you're connected, click on the three dots against any message in Slack. You'll see the shortcut in the menu.

Select the project on Marvin to which you want to export. Click "Save" to confirm.

You’ll see the message as a new file in your project in Marvin. You can only create new files.

Marvin can also automatically create notes for any files you add from Slack. Just make sure you enable this in project settings: "Create auto-notes automatically for all imported files".

Automate sharing on Slack

You can use the integration to share research in Marvin with your team on Slack. Setup automations to share summaries of published Insights and all new project files to specified channels in Slack.*

*Make published Insights visible to everyone to use this feature. Admins can switch it on from "Data access" in Admin settings.

There are multiple ways to set up this automation.

After you've connected your Slack account and on the Integrations tab, you'll see an option to configure. It looks similar to the panel in the Admin settings shown below.

Admins can choose a Slack channel to share published Insights across all projects from Admin settings. They can also choose different channels to share file summaries for each project.

However, anyone with access to a specific project can override this from project settings. They can either choose a different channel or switch off automated sharing to Slack for the project.

View summaries, clips, and Playlists directly in Slack

When you share links to files in Marvin, your teammates can watch the videos and read summaries directly in Slack*. They can consume research and gather context without leaving Slack. They'll be able to access summaries for all documents, clips, Playlists, Insight reports, and recordings.

*Make published Insights visible to everyone to use this feature. Admins can switch it on from "Data access" in Admin settings.
