Mask PII with one click

Updated this week

Marvin can automatically detect and remove any mention of personally identifiable information (PII) in transcripts, audio and video recordings. PII includes names, email addresses, and other sensitive information – such as age, gender, race, etc.

You can use this feature to ensure that your research complies with data privacy regulations like GDPR and HIPAA.

To mask sensitive information, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the video or audio you want to redact. In case it is currently stored outside Marvin, please upload or import it

  2. Click 'Hide participant's personal info' on any file in a project. You'll see this option in the Files tab in a project.

You can also do hide sensitive information within the Annotation tool. You’ll see the Annotation tool when you click on the file.

Click on the same icon in the top toolbar.

In both cases, you will have these options to mask information:

  1. Blur the video: You can choose to blur the faces of the people in the video or the entire video.

  2. Remove video and audio: This will retain only the transcript and call notes

  3. Mask speaker voice: This will distort the voice of all participants to make them unrecognizable

  4. Remove PII: You can also choose to remove specific information. The list is visible on the page and in the images below

3. Once you’ve selected the changes you want to make, click “Reprocess file”. Confirm the change by selecting “Yes, proceed” in the next step.

Once the PII redaction features are selected, Marvin will process the file automatically.

Marvin securely deletes the original video files after processing, and we will only store the PII-redacted version. This action is not reversible.

You can now share your research without revealing any sensitive information.
