How do I mask sensitive and personally identifiable information in recordings?

Mask PII with one click

Updated this week

What is personally identifiable information?

Marvin can automatically detect and remove any mention of personally identifiable information (PII) in transcripts, audio, and video recordings. PII includes names, email addresses, and other identifiable information – such as age, gender, race, etc.

You can also mask PII in surveys and support tickets. Learn more about this in our help center article.

Use PII redaction to ensure that your research complies with data privacy regulations like GDPR and HIPAA.

This feature is available to all Admins and Contributors on Enterprise plans.

How do I mask PII?

Go to the "Files" tab in your project and locate the video or audio you want to redact. Click "Hide participant's personal info" against the file name. You'll see this option for every file.

You'll also see this option within the file. Click "All actions" in the top toolbar and select "Hide participant's personal info".

What kind of information can I mask?

You'll see a range of options and controls to mask PII. Let's explore how each of them works:

  1. Remove video: Delete just the video recording. You'll retain the audio, transcript, and corresponding notes.

  2. Remove audio: Delete the audio, transcript and notes, and retain just the video.

  3. Blur faces and names: Marvin can automatically detect and blur faces and/or names throughout the video. When you toggle on this option, you can decide to blur faces or names, or blur both.

  4. Blur selected area in the video: You can apply a mask to a specific clip and area of the video. Marvin gives you the option to blur different areas for different parts of the video.

  5. Blur entire video: Marvin can automatically mask the entire video for you. You'll can still view the recording, but it will be completely blurred.

  6. Modulate voices of people: Distort the voices of all participants to mask their identity.

  7. Hide sensitive details from transcript and audio: Here, you have granular control to remove specific information from the audio and transcript. Marvin can detect and redact information such as phone numbers, banking details, age, etc. in the supported languages.

Confirm the changes

Once you’ve selected the changes you want to make, click "Apply redaction".

Marvin securely deletes the original video files after processing and stores just the PII-redacted version. This action is not reversible.

How do I process multiple files together?

You can mask PII in bulk rather than repeating this process for each file. Select all the files in your project and click "Hide participant's personal info" in the toolbar.

Setup up automatic PII redaction for all new projects

You can set up Marvin to automatically blur video, mask voices and redact text in transcripts for all recordings in all new projects.

Head over to Admin settings, and select your preferences under "Data privacy"

Your enabled settings will apply to all new projects. In case you want to change the settings for a particular project, you can override this from individual project settings. You can set this up for a new project and an existing one.

That's it! You can now share and store your research without revealing any sensitive information.
