How to create label templates

Create a group of labels to consistently use across projects

What are label templates?

Label templates are a group of labels that can be attached to projects so that everyone consistently uses the same terms to categorize data. This helps organize research and analysis.

For example, you can use a Likert scale template with labels such as "Strongly agree", "Neutral", and "Strongly disagree". This standardizes the responses across a project.

Only Admins and Contributors can create and edit label templates.

In this article, we'll cover how you can add new templates and edit existing ones. Do note that any changes you make to an existing template will be applied to all the projects where that template is being used.

How do I find existing label templates?

Select "Templates" in the left navigation menu on the home page.

Here you’ll see all the templates created by your team.

How do I create new label templates?

You can also create your own templates. Click "Add new label template" in the top navigation bar.

You can either start with a blank template or build on an existing template attached to a project.

To modify an existing template, select "Create copy of a project". You’ll see a list of projects whose template you can modify.

Once you’ve given your new template a name and short description, click on it to add and edit labels.

For example, this is what the market research template in Marvin looks like.

Edit labels

If you hover over a specific label, you’ll see some options to customize. If you make a change to a template, it will be updated in all the projects where the template is being used.

1. Change color

To easily identify labels, you can change the color for each parent and child label. Click on the colour icon and choose one from the shown options. You can choose to apply the same colour to all of its child labels as well.

2. Edit label

You can change the name and description of the template from here. To change the parent label, you can drag and drop the label to where you want it.

3. Merge labels

Use this option in case some labels in your template are redundant and you want to merge the data under these labels.

4. Delete label

Click on the bin icon to delete the label immediately. You’ll see a message confirming the change.

5. Add child label

When you need to classify your data in more detail, you can create a child label. Your template can contain up to 5 layers of labels.

6. Created by

The last icon indicates who created that specific label.
