Marvin can automatically detect, remove, and redact personally identifiable information (PII) from AI interviews. Set up AI Interviewer and Live Intercept studies to mask PII in transcripts, recordings, and screen shares for every interview.
You can choose what kind of PII to redact, such as names, email addresses, age, location, gender, etc.
PII redaction is available to all Admins, Full seats, and Collaborators on Enterprise plans. Users on Pro plans can add on PII redaction as an upgrade.
With PII redaction, you can protect your data and make sure your research complies with privacy regulations like GDPR and HIPAA.

How do I mask PII in AI Interviewer and Live Intercept studies?
Open the Studies tab from the left navigation menu in Home.
Find your study and click the three dots menu against the study name. Select Hide participant’s personal info from the menu.
What kind of information can I mask?
You'll see a range of options and controls to mask PII. Let's explore how each of them works:
Remove video: Delete just the video recording. You'll retain the audio, transcript, and corresponding notes.
Remove audio: Delete the audio, transcript and notes, and retain just the video.
Blur entire video: Marvin can automatically mask the entire video for you. You'll can still view the recording, but it will be completely blurred.
Blur faces and names: Marvin can automatically detect and blur faces and/or names throughout the video, even if they appear as speaker labels or on a screen share. When you toggle on this option, you can decide to blur faces or names, or blur both.
5. Blur selected area in the video: You can apply a mask to a specific clip and area of the video. Marvin gives you the option to blur different areas for different parts of the video.
6. Modulate voices of people: Distort the voices of all participants to mask their identity.
7. Anonymize speaker identities: Replaces the name and email of each speaker with an alias in speaker tags, the Participant panel, Research Panel, Ask AI answers, notes, auto-notes, and file summaries. Ensure Marvin users cannot identify an anonymized speaker by their name, email ID or other personal details.
This is a distinct and more advanced redaction compared with blurring names and email addresses in the video, audio, and transcript. Learn more.
8. Hide sensitive details from transcript and audio: Here, you have granular control to remove specific information from the audio and transcript. Marvin can detect and redact information such as phone numbers, banking details, age, etc. in the supported languages.
Note: If any notes were added to the transcript before redaction, the notes will remain unchanged. Please check and create notes carefully for such files.
Confirm the changes
Once you’ve selected the changes you want to make, click Save setting. Do note that this applies to all new interviews and does not redact PII in the interviews which have already been completed. To redact existing interviews, follow the steps in the next section.
Marvin securely deletes the original video files after processing and stores just the PII-redacted version. This action is not reversible.
Redact PII from existing interviews
To mask PII in interviews already completed, go to your study from the Studies tab. Select the Individual Respondents tab at the top of the page. Choose the name of the participant on the left and click on Full session on the right to open the interview.
Click All actions in the top toolbar and select Hide participant’s personal info. You can choose from the same settings available for masking data in the study.
Exclude specific words from being redacted
Marvin will redact words such as "Claude" because it appears to be a person’s name. However, knowing that a participant prefers using Anthropic’s Claude over other AI tools may be information crucial to your study.
You can specify words and phrases you want Marvin to retain when it runs automatic redaction. You can create this list of words excluded from redaction to be applied to all files in a project, as well as at the team level, i.e., all projects in Marvin. At the moment, you cannot create exclusion lists for just one or a few files.
How do I exclude certain words from redaction at the team level?
Only Admins can create a PII exclusion list at the team level. They must select Settings > Admin settings from the left navigation menu.
Click Data privacy > Edit settings.
Against Exclude words from redaction, select Show list to create or edit the list of words.
Your company name is added to the list by default. You may edit or delete it from the list.
To separate multiple terms, words, or phrases, you can use any of these formats: add commas or semicolons, add new lines, press Tab, or press Enter. You can also paste a list you’ve already prepared. Click Continue once done.
Remember to select Save settings to apply these changes.
Once updated, Marvin will not redact these terms or phrases in any file in any project. These terms will appear in transcripts, audio, video, open-ended survey responses, and meeting recordings. If you make changes to the list, those will not be applied to files that have already been redacted. You must run PII redaction again for such files.
How do I exclude certain words from redaction for a project?
Admins, Full seat users, and Collaborators with access to a project set up PII exclusion if they have access to a project. They can also add the list while creating a new project.
Open your project and select Project settings > Data Privacy from the left navigation menu. Click Edit settings/Override and edit settings to access the PII settings.
Select Show list against Exclude words from redaction to create or edit the list of words.
If a term has been excluded for redaction at the team level, you will see it here too. However, it can also be edited or removed from Admin settings.

How does Marvin check if a word should be excluded?
Marvin excludes all variations of your specified words, including if they are
In upper case, lower case
Separated by hyphens, spaces, or other punctuation
Plurals of the word/phrase
Different pronunciations of the same word.
If "New" and "New York" both are on the list, the entire term New York will be redacted wherever there might be a doubt.
If only "John" is excluded but the text says "John Smith"), Marvin will retain Jon and redact the rest, shown as "John ██████."
