Add and manage labels in a project

Edit, add, and remove label templates in a project to standardize how users code data

In Marvin, you can use labels to standardize how data in each project is coded for analysis.

At the repository level, you can create templates for your entire team to use. In this article, we’ll explore how you can add those templates to a project, or make your own labels.

How do I add labels to a project?

To get started, navigate to your project and select the “Labels” tab.

If you’ve not created any labels yet, you’ll see options to

Add new labels (start from scratch)

If you select “Create new label”, you’ll see a bar to type the name of your new label. As you start typing, Marvin will suggest labels being used by your team in other projects. Click on any suggestion to import that label.

These measures help avoid duplicate labels being created in the system and give you an idea of how users are coding data in other projects.

Upload a CSV

You may want to bring in labels your team has already been using in other tools. You can import multiple labels at once by uploading a CSV. All you need to do is make sure the CSV has a few specific columns in the right order. Marvin will read the file and add all the labels if your file is formatted correctly.

If you’ve not added labels to your project yet, select “Import from CSV” on the starting page. Or you’ll find this option under “Add new labels” if your project already has some labels.

You’ll see an option to download the format or template in which you need to upload your CSV.

Once you upload and confirm the file, you can view and edit the imported labels.

Choose from templates

To save time and code uniformly across projects, you can choose a

  1. Team template: Made by an Admin or Contributor on your Marvin team

  2. Pre-made sample: Suggested preset templates created by Marvin

  3. Add labels from existing templates or projects

  4. Link your project to a template to freeze labels

You can add labels from a template to your project at any point, even if you’ve already created labels. Marvin will merge any similar-sounding labels to remove duplicates.

Select “Add/remove templates” in the Labels tab.

Against any template, click “Preview” to see the corresponding list of labels.

Select “Use template” to add the entire list. You cannot edit or pick individual labels from the list. If you want to remove any labels, click “Add/remove templates” and select “Remove” against the template. You’ll see this message if you try to delete individual labels.

You may also choose to link or attach your project to a template. However, each time the template is updated, the labels in your project will automatically be updated too. You cannot unlink a template. However, you may delete individual labels (You must delete all child labels to delete parent labels). This will not make any changes to the template being used across Marvin.

To link a template, select “Add new labels” and click “Manage templates”

Admins usually recommend this option to standardize coding and make sure no duplicate labels are created.

View and search for labels

Once you’ve added all labels, you can check the list to make sure you haven’t missed anything. Use the search bar or “Collapse all groups” option to scan your labels.

You may also save your selection as a new template which can be used by the rest of your team.

Where do I use these labels in my project?

Labels in Marvin are attached to notes. Navigate to any file in the project from the Files tab. You can attach labels to an existing or new note. You’ll see the list of labels when you select “Add label” on any note.
