Visualize your data in Canvas boards for projects such as affinity mapping

Updated this week

When should I use Canvas boards?

Marvin has a few different ways in which you can visualize your notes while you’re analyzing the research.

You can use Canvas boards to move around your notes and organize them. This is particularly useful when you want to do affinity mapping based on notes from user calls. Or, you can use it to brainstorm ideas, sort through research findings and make sense of user feedback.

How do I use Canvas boards?

Navigate to ‘Analyze’ in the project where you want to create a Canvas board. You'll be taken to the 'Notes' tab by default. Switch to 'Boards'.

Create a new Canvas board or select an existing one.

You’ll see all the notes you’ve made in this project neatly laid out on the board.

Filter notes

To focus on specific notes, use the filters on top to zone in on the right data.

You can use all these filters while creating your Canvas board.

  • Labels: The labels you used to categorize your notes

  • Participants data: Data from the research panel of recognized call participants

  • Questions: The questions in your discussion guides that you mapped to notes

  • File tags: The tags you used to categorize your project files

  • Survey metadata: Data from surveys imported into your project

  • Created by: The person who created a note

  • Creation date: The date when a note was created

  • Sentiment: The sentiment you attached to notes while creating them

  • Important notes: Any notes you marked as important while creating them

Organize notes

To change how notes are grouped together, just drag and drop them anywhere on the board

You can also use the cursor icon on the toolbar or ‘V’ on your keyboard to select notes. Hold down and drag notes to rearrange them around the board.

If you want to revisit a note, click ‘Open note’ to view the clip in the recording. You can also edit or delete the note from the board itself.

View the entire board

To navigate around the board, select the hand tool or press ‘Space’ on your keyboard. Drag in any direction to view more of the board.

You can also zoom in and out using the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts ‘(Command) + (+)/(Command) + (-)

Add text and coloured boxes

You can add text boxes to include more detail in your canvas board. Click ‘Text’ in the toolbar or ‘T’ on your keyboard to draw a text box anywhere on the board.

Click the rectangle symbol or press ‘R’ on your keyboard to demarcate your board into color-coded sections. You can place notes on these rectangles to help with visualization.

Organize your board

Choose ‘Reset stage’ or (Command) + (0) to reorganize the notes the way they were when you started.

You can also select multiple notes by dragging your cursor over the white space around them. Select ‘Organize notes’ to arrange the notes in one line.
