What is Analyze notes?
The Analyze notes tab in each project offers a range of preset AI functions to help you synthesize your notes into actionable research. You can use these to get started and check if you’ve covered all the important points. It’s almost like having a research assistant to help you speed up insight collation.
In this article, we’ll explore when and how you should use the following types of analysis available to you:
To begin, head to the Analysis tab in your project from the left navigation menu. You'll see three subtabs:
1. Analyze notes
3. Boards
Select Analyze notes to see notes across all files and by all users with access to the project.
How do I run AI analysis on notes?
Select the notes relevant to the report or hypothesis you’re working on. You’ll see an Ask AI bar in the toolbar. You can ask a specific question about the selected or all notes, or use the preset AI analysis to get started.
Quick thematic analysis
This analysis can be particularly useful when you want to uncover topics that repeat across multiple calls and files in your project. You may choose to use it to analyze usability testing calls, feedback calls, demos, etc.
It searches the selected notes, identifies themes and highlights how often the theme came up in the notes.
Quick thematic analysis can be a great starting point for your research. All the themes and sub-themes that Marvin identifies may become points where you want to delve deeper. You may then choose to use the Advanced thematic analysis.
You can add the analysis to an Insight, copy the test, share it with team members*, or regenerate the analysis.

Advanced thematic analysis
The advanced version of thematic analysis goes a step further, identifying an exhaustive list of topics and adding more detail to each of them. Marvin also creates a graph for you to visualize the data and present it in your reports.
Marvin may take longer to generate the advanced thematic analysis. You can navigate away from the page as Marvin will notify and email you when the analysis is complete.
Select Source of analysis to verify the insights.
Or Mentioned in X notes under any theme to read the corresponding notes.
You can multi-select notes and add labels too. Use the labels to easily locate these notes later and in cross-project analysis.
You can share the analysis with team members in a few different ways:
Share the link (team members with access to the project will be able to view it)
Add the analysis to an Insight report. You can add context and more data too.
Create an affinity board from the result.
Emotion analysis
You may want to use emotion analysis when you’re trying to determine user sentiment. It can be particularly handy in projects that contain surveys, and your notes on user feedback.
Marvin will scan all the information in your notes and present the sentiment in a pie chart. You can click on each segment to view the corresponding notes and also add this to an Insight report.
Trend analysis
Marvin can use the context of your notes and linked files to detect emerging patterns or changes in data over time. Trends may evolve as you add more data to the project. Hence, the analysis may vary for different stages of the project.
Marvin may include forecasts or predictions about future trends based on existing data.
In comparison, thematic analysis highlights recurring themes and sub-themes. Marvin may quantify how often each them is mentioned and link back to sources. Themes are generally more consistent than trends and resonate with your core findings and research goals.
Best practices to generate accurate AI analysis
You can generate extremely accurate AI analysis if you give Marvin the right context.
1. Make high quality and detailed notes
For each type of analysis, the AI will focus only on the notes you make and the selected portion of the file or transcript. Make sure that you add the right details to notes.
2. Add labels to notes
Labels make it easier for Marvin to detect patterns.
3. Select the right notes
Use filters to search among the most releavnt notes. You do not want to include data that is beyond the scope of your hypothesis.
